Clear beds before the ground freezes
Leaving dead annuals, fallen leaves, and debris in beds through the winter gives pests and disease somewhere to overwinter. Clearing beds in late fall, before the first hard freeze, gives perennials a cleaner start in spring.
Mulch protects roots from temperature swings
A fresh layer of mulch in the fall insulates root systems against the freeze-thaw cycle, which is often more damaging to plants than steady cold. It also helps retain moisture through the drier winter months.
Hardscape needs proper drainage before it freezes
Water that sits on or under a patio or walkway and then freezes can cause pavers to heave or crack over the winter. Making sure joints are properly sanded and that water has somewhere to drain before the cold sets in protects the investment in the hardscape.
Prune before heavy snow, not after
Overgrown or weak branches are more likely to break under snow and ice load. Structural pruning in late fall, especially on trees and shrubs near walkways or the house, reduces the chance of storm damage.
Have a snow plan before the first storm
The best time to line up snow removal is before you need it, not during the first storm of the season. Knowing who is clearing your driveway and by when takes one thing off your plate once winter actually arrives.
